Choosing between coffins and caskets in Uganda is a decision most families have to make quickly, often within a day or two of a loss. This guide lays out the practical differences — style, material, and typical cost — so the decision feels informed rather than overwhelming.
The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but there is a real difference. A coffin has a tapered, six-sided shape, wider at the shoulders and narrower at the feet — the more traditional shape used across much of Uganda. A casket is rectangular, with a hinged lid, and is more associated with Western-style funeral customs, though it's increasingly common and available locally as well. Both are available in a range of materials and finishes, and the right choice usually comes down to family tradition, the wishes of the deceased, and budget.
Most coffins and caskets in Uganda are built from wood, finished in one of a few common styles: a deep, glossy dark-wood finish for a traditional, formal look; a lighter oak-toned finish for a softer appearance; and simpler, unfinished or lightly finished wood for families working within a tighter budget. Fittings — handles, corner details, and interior lining — also vary and affect the overall price. None of these choices reflect on how much a family cared; they simply reflect different budgets and different aesthetic preferences.

As a general guide: simple, dignified coffins typically start from around UGX 400,000; mid-range oak-finish caskets from around UGX 700,000; and polished hardwood caskets with detailed brass-effect fittings from around UGX 1,200,000 and up.
