The trade-off is that marble weathers faster than granite when it's constantly exposed to outdoor conditions, so we generally recommend it for headstones and accent details rather than an entire grave surface.
Terrazzo: Affordable and Durable
Terrazzo is a cost-effective option for finishing a full grave surface, with a distinctive speckled appearance and solid durability outdoors. It doesn't take fine engraving the way granite does, so many families choose a terrazzo grave surface paired with a separate granite or marble headstone for the inscription — giving a dignified result without the cost of finishing the entire grave in granite.

If budget allows and you want maximum durability with the option of detailed engraving, granite is usually the strongest choice. If detailed carving or religious imagery is the priority, marble headstones paired with granite or terrazzo grave surfaces are a common combination. If you're working with a tighter budget but still want a genuinely dignified, long-lasting result, terrazzo grave finishing is a well-proven option.
