Graves are built to last, but Uganda's weather — strong sun, heavy seasonal rain, and shifting ground — can take a toll over the years. Grave renovation is one of the more common requests we receive, and it's often more straightforward than families expect.
Signs a Grave May Need Renovation
The most common issues we're asked to fix include: a granite or terrazzo surface that has become dull, stained, or worn; a headstone with faded or damaged engraving; cracks in the grave surface or headstone; and grave structures that have shifted or settled unevenly over time due to ground movement.
Re-Polishing and Restoring the Surface
A worn granite or terrazzo surface can usually be re-polished to restore its original finish, rather than needing to be rebuilt entirely. This is often the most cost-effective renovation option and can make an older grave look close to new again.
Repairing or Replacing a Headstone
If a headstone is cracked, badly faded, or was never finished to a standard the family is happy with, we can repair it, re-engrave it, or replace it entirely — including updating it to add a name for a more recent burial in a family plot.
Rebuilding Structural Issues
Where a grave has genuinely shifted or deteriorated structurally rather than just cosmetically, more involved rebuilding work may be needed. We assess this honestly and explain what's actually required rather than recommending more work than necessary.
